Glenn Miller was a bandleader and trombonist of Big Band Jazz who enjoyed immense popularity from the late 1930s to the early 1940s. The Glenn Miller Orchestra he led is known for signature songs like “In the Mood” and “Moonlight Serenade,” and its smooth, sophisticated sound became the emblem of the Swing Era. He particularly established the distinctive “Glenn Miller Sound,” which layered a clarinet over the elegant lead melody of the saxophone section, achieving great commercial success. During World War II, he disbanded his orchestra and enlisted in the Army Air Forces, forming the Army Air Force Band to boost troop morale and performing in Europe. However, in 1944, the plane he was aboard went missing over the English Channel, and he was presumed lost. While his untimely death was a tragedy, his music continues to be beloved worldwide to this day.
