ディミニッシュスケールとは、半音と全音（または全音と半音）が交互に繰り返される形で構成される音階のことだ。このため、「ハーフ・ホール・ディミニッシュスケール（H-W）」と「ホール・ハーフ・ディミニッシュスケール（W-H）」の2つの基本的なパターンが存在する。
ハーフ・ホール・ディミニッシュスケールは、ルート音から始まり、半音、全音、半音、全音…と交互に進む。例えば、Cから始まるH-Wディミニッシュスケールは、C, C#, D#, E, F#, G, A, A#の8音からなる。これは減七の和音と密接な関係があり、それぞれの音が減七の和音を形成する。
一方、ホール・ハーフ・ディミニッシュスケールは、ルート音から始まり、全音、半音、全音、半音…と交互に進む。Cから始まるW-Hディミニッシュスケールは、C, D, D#, F, F#, G#, A, Bの8音からなる。
ディミニッシュスケールは、その対称的な構造から、移調しても同じ音程構造を持つという特徴がある。例えば、CのH-Wディミニッシュスケールを短3度（3半音）上に移調すると、E♭のH-Wディミニッシュスケールとなるが、構成音は同じものが現れる。このため、実質的に異なるディミニッシュスケールは3種類しか存在しない。
このスケールは非常に緊張感のある響きを持ち、解決を求める力が強い。主にジャズやクラシック音楽において、不協和な響きや転調の場面、またはアプローチノートとして、楽曲に劇的な効果や色彩豊かなハーモニーを与えるために頻繁に用いられる。
A diminished scale is a musical scale constructed by an alternating pattern of half steps and whole steps (or whole steps and half steps). Because of this, two basic patterns exist: the “Half-Whole Diminished Scale (H-W)” and the “Whole-Half Diminished Scale (W-H).”
The Half-Whole Diminished Scale starts from the root note and alternates with a half step, then a whole step, then a half step, a whole step, and so on. For example, an H-W diminished scale starting on C consists of eight notes: C, C#, D#, E, F#, G, A, A#. This scale is closely related to the diminished seventh chord, with each of its notes capable of forming a diminished seventh chord.
Conversely, the Whole-Half Diminished Scale starts from the root note and alternates with a whole step, then a half step, then a whole step, a half step, and so on. A W-H diminished scale starting on C consists of eight notes: C, D, D#, F, F#, G#, A, B.
Due to its symmetrical structure, the diminished scale has the characteristic of maintaining the same interval structure even when transposed. For instance, transposing a C H-W diminished scale up a minor third (three semitones) results in an E♭ H-W diminished scale, but the constituent notes are the same. Consequently, there are effectively only three unique diminished scales.
This scale possesses a very tense sound and a strong tendency to resolve. It is frequently used in jazz and classical music to create dramatic effects and rich harmonies, especially for dissonant sounds, modulation passages, or as approach notes.
