He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1935. He started playing the guitar at a young age and was influenced by great preceding guitarists like Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery, but he established his own highly distinctive and recognizable tone. His signature approach was his emphasis on single-note playing, unlike other guitarists who frequently used chordal accompaniment. His phrasing was simple yet incredibly swinging, and his singing, melodic quality stood out.
Green’s career was largely centered around Blue Note Records. He participated in numerous classic albums both as a leader and a sideman for top musicians on the label, including Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark, and Joe Henderson. His leader albums such as Idle Moments and Green Street are particularly famous.
From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, he excelled in the soul jazz field, incorporating funk and R&B elements into jazz, producing many hits. However, his career was tumultuous due to personal difficulties, including drug issues.
