Anita O’Day is an American jazz singer who was active particularly from the Swing Era through the Modern Jazz era. She is known for her cool, rhythmic, and unique style, setting her apart from other great female vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.
She was born in 1919. She began singing early, starting her professional career as a teenager. A major turning point came in 1941 when she joined drummer Gene Krupa’s band. She sang with an instrumental-like approach, distinct from the traditional sweet female vocal style, and gained significant attention, particularly with the hit song “Let’s Get Away From It All” with Krupa.
O’Day later joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra, cementing her status. Her singing style, while influenced by bebop, focused on accurate rhythm and clear articulation without overly distorting the melody.
