Walter Wanderley is an organist from Brazil who gained international fame, especially for his jazz organ playing that incorporated the feeling of bossa nova and samba. His music gained significant popularity in the 1960s, thanks to his light, rhythmic style and the warm tone of the Hammond B-3 organ.
He was born in São Paulo in 1932 and started his career as a pianist when he was young, but later switched to the organ. Wanderley’s playing is characterized by bringing the sophisticated rhythmic sensibility unique to Brazilian music, or “groove,” into jazz improvisation.
