George Benson is an American guitarist and singer, an artist who has achieved success across diverse genres including jazz, R&B, and pop. He began his career as a jazz guitarist with astonishing technique but later incorporated his unique vocal style and became a global superstar.
He was born in Pittsburgh in 1943. He started playing the ukulele and guitar at a young age, and by his teens, he was already performing in local R&B clubs. His early career saw him rise in the jazz world; particularly in the 1960s, while influenced by guitarist Wes Montgomery, he developed a faster and more sophisticated playing style. He established his reputation through collaborations with prominent jazz musicians like Miles Davis and Hank Mobley.
Benson’s turning point came in 1976. His album Breezin’, released by Warner Bros., contained a balanced mix of instrumental and vocal tracks, becoming a crossover hit beyond the boundaries of jazz and winning a Grammy Award. His vocal performance on “This Masquerade” from this album, and his unique technique of synchronizing scat singing (improvising with non-lexical vocables) with the tone of his guitar during solos, became his trademark.
Subsequently, he released a string of hits, including “Give Me the Night,” continuing his musical activities by incorporating elements of disco and R&B while staying true to his jazz roots. He is a multiple Grammy Award winner, and his technique and musicality continue to influence many guitarists and vocalists today.
