Stan Getz is an American tenor saxophonist, widely known as one of the most influential musicians in jazz history. He was nicknamed “The Sound” and rose to prominence with his sweet, breathy, beautiful tone and lyrical (song-like) playing style.
He was born in 1927 and displayed his talent early on. He began his career playing with bands like the Woody Herman Orchestra and came to the fore during the bebop era, but he played a particularly important role in the cool jazz movement. His playing was heavily influenced by Lester Young, yet possessed a more refined sense of melody and harmony.
One of the most notable achievements in Getz’s career was introducing bossa nova to the United States and the world in the early 1960s, sparking a major craze. In particular, the album Getz/Gilberto, recorded with guitarist João Gilberto and singer Astrud Gilberto, achieved historic success. The track “The Girl from Ipanema” on this album became a global blockbuster hit, transcending the boundaries of jazz and solidifying his fame.
