Sarah Vaughan is an American jazz singer counted as one of the “Big Three” female jazz vocalists, alongside Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. She was nicknamed “The Divine One” for her astonishing vocal range, flawless technique rooted in classical training, and rich expressive power.
She was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1924. From a young age, she sang in the church choir and studied piano. A major turning point in her career came in 1942 when she won an Amateur Night contest at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. This led her to begin singing with big bands led by prominent musicians such as Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie, and she became deeply involved in the bebop movement.
Vaughan’s singing style was not merely a reproduction of the melody but excelled in free improvisation, much like an instrument, and the ability to understand and incorporate complex harmonies into her singing. In particular, her technique of subtly reshaping the melody and applying a distinctive vibrato was inimitable by other singers.
She remained active until her later years, continuously imbuing numerous standard songs, such as “September in the Rain” and “Come Rain Or Come Shine,” with her unique interpretation and magical brilliance.
