TSフォンケーブルとは、エレキギターや一部のキーボードなど、楽器の接続に最も一般的に使われるケーブルのことだ。先端から順に**チップ（Tip）とスリーブ（Sleeve）**という二つの接点だけで構成されており、シールドケーブルという俗称で呼ばれることも多い。
このケーブルは、二本の線だけで信号を伝送するアンバランス接続方式を採用している。そのため、構造が単純で扱いやすい反面、信号線とグラウンド線しかないため、外部からのノイズの影響を受けやすく、特にケーブルが長くなるとノイズが乗りやすくなったり、高音域が失われたりといった音質の劣化が生じやすい。
したがって、TSフォンケーブルは、主にギターとアンプの間など、短い距離でハイインピーダンスの信号を伝送する用途に適している。エフェクター同士を繋ぐパッチケーブルにもこの規格が使われることが多いが、長距離の配線やノイズ対策が必要なプロの現場では、バランス接続のケーブルが選ばれるのが普通だ。
