ノンダイアトニックコード / non-diatonic code

ノンダイアトニック・コードとは、ある曲のキー（調）を定めるスケール（音階）の音以外を含んでいる和音のことだ。
曲の安定した響きの基盤となるダイアトニック・コードに対し、ノンダイアトニック・コードは一時的な緊張感、意外性、または感情的な深みを加えるために導入される。具体的には、セカンダリー・ドミナント、サブドミナント・マイナー、モーダル・インターチェンジなどで借用されたコードがこれにあたる。これらのコードは、調性を完全に崩すことなく、音楽に色彩とドラマをもたらす。これらを使うことで、作曲家は聴衆の耳を新鮮に保ち、より表現豊かなハーモニーを作ることができるのだ。

A non-diatonic chord is a chord that contains tones outside the scale that defines the song’s key (tonality).
While diatonic chords form the stable sonic foundation of a piece, non-diatonic chords are introduced to add temporary tension, surprise, or emotional depth. Specifically, this includes chords borrowed through techniques like the secondary dominant, subdominant minor, and modal interchange. These chords bring color and drama to the music without completely destroying the tonality. By utilizing them, composers can keep the listener’s ear fresh and create more expressive harmony.
